History
SBA * Consulting began life in 1990 as an accounting system implementer and computer/networking company. "Systems for Business and Accounting" was our tag line, and hence, SBA * Consulting was born. The asterisk was borrowed from Macy*s and our name was now unique and hopefully would draw people to us because of the simile to the US Small Business Administration (SBA).
That never did quite happen, but the US SBA did notice us when we first went on the Internet, by asking (rather strongly) to place a disclaimer on our web site.
While implementing accounting systems, Wayne Spivak would often become the interim Controller and CFO of his clients. In the late 1990's he began implementing accounting systems in the entertainment industry, specifically the modeling industry. Several years and multiple modeling firms later he was asked to become the interim CFO of dna Model Management, which became his major client for the next decade.
In January of 2011 the relationship ran its course and Mr. Spivak re-focused and re-branded the consulting business. He decided to forgo Information Technology for the Finance/Accounting arena and began to market part-time and interim CFO services. His new business plan definitely rules out implementing any high-end accounting system, but is more than willing to provide project management oversight.
It became quickly apparent that the need was substantial, the competition in his opinion not up to snuff, especially if he were to tweak their business model. To this end, SBA * Consulting is able to provide consultants with expert knowledge in a plethora of vertical markets with men and women who average about 25 years worth of experience each.
He also was working towards phase 3 of his business plan, creating a business that was not dependent on him. In "The Entrepreneur Equation" by Carol Roth, she outlines several different types of employment, one such type being a "job-business". In this model, the business is really a job and it is for the most part entirely dependent on one person. That business model also doesn't enjoy a fair multiple (sales price) when the owner tries to sell the company.
Mr. Spivak decided to create the "business" model, wherein, the business will run because the business has excellent management, a unique working business plan and employees that are empowered to succeed. This is SBA * Consulting LTD.
Now five months later (May 2011), he has opened offices in two of the New York Metropolitan Area regions and is moving north into New England. With over 30 Consulting CFO's, Controller's and Bookkeepers the company is beginning to gain traction.
In late June 2011, he hired a Sales Manager and a second Salesperson, opened up four of the six regions and well the future looks bright.
By September 2011, SBA * Consulting has opened Lower Hudson Valley, NY, Boca Raton, FL as well as Western Connecticut and Massachusetts, in addition to Long Island, New York City, Northern New Jersey and Westchester County, NY.
And we're seeking new metropolitan areas to establish footholds.
As of January 2012, SBA * Consulting has 13 offices along the eastern seaboard and approximately 60 Consulting CFO's.
